Open-Barrel Terminal Crimp Inspection MasterclassIPC/WHMA-A-620 Class 3
Over 75% of mobile robot electrical failures in the field trace back to poor crimping. Explore the anatomy of an ideal gas-tight F-crimp and diagnose the four most dangerous terminal defects.
RECOMMENDED CRIMP TOOLS
Engineer PA-09 / PA-20: Precision Japanese stepped dies for 1.0mm-1.9mm micro-terminals (JST-ZH, JST-GH, PicoBlade).
IWISS IWS-2820M: Excellent ratcheting dual-action crimper for JST-PH (2.0mm) and JST-XH (2.54mm).
IWISS SN-2549: Ratcheting tool with micro-wire alignment guide for Dupont & XH.
CRITICAL FIELD HAZARDS TO AVOID
Never Solder Crimped Pins: Solder wicks up the stranded copper wire, creating an abrupt stress-concentration notch where the wire snaps under robot vibration.
Never Use Needle-Nose Pliers: Pliers crush the terminal latch and fail to generate gas-tight cold welding, resulting in oxidized high-resistance joints.
Perform Tug-Test: Every hand-crimped terminal must resist a firm 15-20 Newton axial pull before housing insertion.
CAN Bus Differential Line Termination StudioISO 11898-2
CAN bus requires exactly 120Ω line termination at both extreme physical ends of the linear bus to match transmission line characteristic impedance ($Z_0 \approx 120\,\Omega$) and prevent signal reflections.
Differential DC Resistance
60.0 Ω (Net Bus)
Two 120Ω resistors in parallel across CAN_H and CAN_L.
Common-Mode Filter Cutoff ($f_c$)
1.13 MHz
$f_c = \frac{1}{2\pi \cdot (R/2) \cdot C}$ with $R=60\Omega$, $C=4.7\text{nF}$.
EMI Radiation Reduction
-12 dB @ HF
Shunts common-mode noise to chassis GND without loading differential signal.
I²C uses open-drain drivers. Rising edges are entirely shaped by the passive RC charging curve ($V(t) = V_{DD}(1 - e^{-t/(R_p \cdot C_b)})$). Calculate exact minimum and maximum pull-up resistance to prevent clock stretching failures and transmission errors.

RS-485 Differential Bus Fail-Safe Biasing NetworkTIA/EIA-485-A
When all transceivers on an RS-485 bus are in receive mode (high impedance), the differential voltage $V_{AB} = V_A - V_B$ drifts to 0V. Because standard RS-485 receiver thresholds lie between $-200\,\text{mV}$ and $+200\,\text{mV}$, ambient EMI noise causes receivers to oscillate, generating false framing errors.
FAIL-SAFE RESISTOR TOPOLOGY:
• Pull-Up $R_{PU}$ (Line A to $V_{CC}$): 560 Ω - 1 kΩ
• Line Termination $R_T$ (Line A to Line B): 120 Ω
• Pull-Down $R_{PD}$ (Line B to GND): 560 Ω - 1 kΩ
IDLE VOLTAGE GUARANTEE:
$$V_{AB} = V_{CC} \cdot \frac{R_T}{2 R_{bias} + R_T} \approx 3.3\text{V} \cdot \frac{120}{2(680) + 120} \approx +267\,\text{mV} > +200\,\text{mV}$$
Guarantees continuous recessive mark state (binary 1) during bus idle.
INTEGRATION CHECKLIST:
1. Apply fail-safe bias resistors at ONE node only (typically the master controller or bus power injector) to avoid over-loading transceivers.
2. Never place 120Ω termination resistors at intermediate tap points; strictly at the two physical endpoints of the daisy-chain trunk line.
3. Always route ground reference alongside differential lines (twisted pair + GND shield drain wire).
